# AI Council Orchestrator > AI Council is a free, open-source, cross-platform CLI (macOS, Linux, Windows) that runs multiple AI coding agent CLIs — Claude Code, Gemini CLI, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Antigravity, Aider, OpenCode, Qwen Code, Goose, Amp, Factory Droid — in parallel on the same task, collects their independent plans, runs an anonymized critique pass with required FINAL RANKING and a Devil's Advocate, then a chairman synthesis stage, and saves the whole session to disk as auditable artifacts. It requires no API keys: it orchestrates vendor CLIs the user has already installed and authenticated. Key facts: - Install: `brew install alijamal14/tap/council` (macOS/Linux), `scoop install council` from bucket `alijamal14/scoop-bucket` (Windows), `go install github.com/alijamal14/council@latest`, or install scripts in `scripts/`. - Verify setup: `council doctor` (agent inventory + auth state). Machine-readable: `council doctor --json` returns totals {supported, installed, authenticated, login_required} plus per-agent auth, login hints, and vendor limits URLs. `--ping` verifies auth with one tiny prompt per agent. - Install missing agent CLIs: `council setup --apply` installs the latest stable of every missing agent via its official channel (npm/pip/vendor script, Windows included); `--free` restricts to free-tier/open-source agents (Gemini CLI, Qwen Code, OpenCode, Aider, Goose). - Sign in: `council login` prints a per-agent auth checklist; `council login ` launches that CLI's interactive sign-in flow and re-verifies. - Models: `council models` shows each agent's active model (vendor default unless overridden). Change persistently with `council config set COUNCIL__MODEL `. After each run Council advises (text only, never automatic) if a heavy model was overkill for a small task or a light model underpowered for a complex one. - Persistent settings: `council config set|get|list|unset KEY` stores any COUNCIL_* variable in `/council/config.env`; real env vars override the file. Useful keys: COUNCIL_AGENTS (default roster), COUNCIL__MODEL, COUNCIL_AUTO_UPDATE=1, COUNCIL_CONTEXT_CMD, COUNCIL_SYNTHESIS=0 (disable Phase 3), COUNCIL_CHAIRMAN=. - Updates: `council update` upgrades all installed agent CLIs to latest stable and reports new Council releases; `--check` reports versions only. COUNCIL_AUTO_UPDATE=1 refreshes agents in the background after runs (max once/day). Agents failing pre-flight 3 sessions in a row are auto-disabled (quarantine) with a notice and auto re-enabled when they pass `council doctor --ping` again. Codex mid-run heal: on “requires a newer version of Codex”, upgrade once, prefer the newest binary (npm vs WinGet), and retry. Antigravity unrestricted argv: `--print= --dangerously-skip-permissions`. Long prompts on Windows are written to `*.prompt.txt` beside the artifact. Agents missing with no quarantine line are usually off PATH (Windows WinGet Links shim) — check `council doctor --json`. - RAG hook: set `COUNCIL_CONTEXT_CMD=""` and Council injects its stdout into every agent's context. - Run: `council "your task"` — needs at least one supported AI CLI installed and signed in. - Continue a session: `council --continue council_runs/run_ "feedback"`. - Results: written to `council_runs/run_/` as `plan..txt`, `critique..txt` (with `FINAL RANKING:`), `label_map.json`, `rankings.json`, `synthesis.txt` (Phase 3), `brief.txt`, and `audit.jsonl`. - Exit codes: 0 = all agents succeeded, 1 = partial success, 2 = failure. - If you are an AI agent invoking Council: run it in the background (sessions take minutes and shell tools buffer output), then poll the newest `council_runs/run_*/` directory for result files. Prefer summarizing from plans, critiques, rankings, and synthesis. - Latest release: v1.6.0 (anonymous ranking, chairman synthesis, Windows file-backed long prompts, competitive analysis doc). - Competitive landscape: see COMPETITIVE_ANALYSIS.md (refresh after every release). - License: Apache 2.0.
